"In the highlands of Guatemala live the Maya Indians, whose knowledge and mastery of old weaving methods still persists today.
The men work on a wooden loom, brought there by the Spaniards, and they produce material to sell.
The women use the precolonial backstrap loom weaving textiles with old motives, which are mainly used in traditional garments.
The Woman Cooperative ASODAMEC was founded in 1987 with Canadian assistance.
Their aim is to enable Indian women, whose men were killed during the civil war , to gain an income to support their families.
High-grade chenille yarns are dyed in the traditional Ikat-technique, are woven on the backstrap loom and processed for accessories and garments for export.
The project incorporates 200 Maya women, who work in dependend on the production and distribution of their goods.
The Recycled Glass Coperative COPAVIC was founded 1976 in Cantel, Guatemala.
The coop members built the factory themselves and constructed the heady-duty kiln.
Glass from softdrink and beer bottles are melted , tinted and blown into different shapes.
COPAVIC produces glasses,bowls and jars, as well as lampshades and other decorative items.
COPAVIC, which started with 15 members has now grown to 49 members.
They have received financial assistance from development organisations in Germany and the U.S.A.
The members of COPAVIC are proud in efficiently organizing themselves and in protecting the enviroment by means of producing recycled goods.
Girasol has worked successfully with COPAVIC since 1990.

From a distinguished artisan in Oaxaca ,we obtain a choice of metalworks and the straw products, like hats, are from a Cooperative in Campeche.
Furthermore , we constantly look for new and exciting handcrafted items, we can offer our clients."
